Happy International Womens’ Day

As the Chairperson of the Women in Diplomacy Committee of FICAC, I am honored to share my reflections on International Women’s Day 2025—an occasion to celebrate, to take action and remember the transformative journey toward gender equality.

This year, we not only celebrate the empowerment of women around the world but also commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. This landmark framework, adopted during the Fourth World Conference on Women in 1995, has significantly propelled global efforts to achieve gender equality and empower women and girls. The Beijing Declaration calls for collective action at every level to ensure that women and girls enjoy equal rights and live free from violence and discrimination.

To honor this legacy and highlight the contributions of women throughout history, the Women in Diplomacy Committee (WIDC) has published a special booklet titled “Philately Journey.” This publication celebrates the work of militant women who have fought tirelessly for rights and equality, showcasing their stories through the unique lens of philately. Each stamp tells a powerful story of courage, resilience, and the enduring quest for justice.

While we recognize the progress made over the past three decades, we must also confront the harsh realities that many women continue to face—especially those ensnared in cycles of violence, conflict, and extremist ideologies.

The abduction and exploitation of women and girls by terrorist organizations must not be overlooked. In Nigeria, Boko Haram has kidnapped thousands, including the Chibok girls, many of whom remain missing or suffer profound trauma and stigma upon their return. Similarly, in Iraq, the genocide perpetrated by ISIS against the Yazidi population resulted in the enslavement of women subjected to unimaginable atrocities. Although some have been rescued, countless others remain unaccounted for, highlighting the urgent need for global efforts to secure their release and support survivors.

We must also shed light on the plight of countless women and girls worldwide who are held captive for sex trafficking and drug-related activities. These individuals endure grave abuse and deprivation, facing horrific injustices that strip away their dignity and identity.

The tragic events of October 7 further underscore the ongoing plight of women and girls captured by violence, emphasizing the necessity for immediate attention and intervention.

The fight for gender equality is inextricably linked to the urgent need to liberate women and girls from the chains of violence, captivity, and exploitation.

Across the globe, many women endure violence and systemic inequalities that undermine their dignity and rights. As we honor women this International Women’s Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to building a world where every woman can thrive—free from violence, exploitation, and discrimination.

Let us advocate for change and ensure that every woman and girl has the opportunity to enjoy a life of dignity, safety, and respect.

Together, for a better world
